In a hard-fought PIAA state championship second round matchup at Stroudsburg High School, Notre Dame battled through two overtimes before falling to Dunmore, 65-59, in the tournament.
The Crusaders jumped out to a 21-20 first-quarter lead, fueled by junior Brenna Hammerstone’s three early three-pointers. ND extended its advantage in the second quarter, outscoring the Bucks 11-4 to take a 31-25 lead into halftime.
Dunmore responded with a strong third quarter, outscoring ND 12-5 to pull within one heading into the fourth. The final quarter was a back-and-forth battle, ending in a 44-44 tie and forcing overtime. The first OT remained just as tight, with both teams locked at 49-49. In the second overtime, foul trouble caught up with the Crusaders as three players fouled out, allowing Dunmore to pull away for the win.
Hammerstone led the Crusaders with a career-high 18 points, sinking six three-pointers. Junior Ella Schweitzer added 13 points, while senior Emily Lessig capped off her career with 12.
Seniors Lessig, Sarah Zambo, and Addi Ryan leave behind an impressive legacy, finishing their four-year careers with a 76-28 record, a league championship, and two District 11 titles.
